NIAH NATIONAL PARK RE-OPENS
-

2/11/2009

Miri, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 – SARAWAK FORESTRY today announced the re-opening of Niah National Park to visitors.  The Park has been temporarily closed since January 31 this year, due to flood which had hit several areas in Miri.

Minor restoration works on affected trails and plank walk has been completed.  Announcing the re-opening was SARAWAK FORESTRY Corporation’s Chief Park Warden said, “we have instructed that the Park be closed to visitors previously due to safety concerns.  Once we are certain that safety inspection routine is completed and result is satisfactory - deemed fit to receive visitors, then only we can announce of its (Niah) re-opening”.
Visitors can now resume their planned activities as usual at the Park.  All of the trails and facilities are ready and operating normally.
Niah is one of Sarawak’s smaller national parks, but it is certainly one of the most important, and has some of the most unusual visitor attractions.  The park’s main claim to fame is its role as one of the birthplaces of civilisation.  The oldest modern human remains discovered in Southeast Asia were found at Niah, making the park one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
