Painted Terrapin (Callugur
borneensis)
The painted terrapin inhabits estuaries and mangrove
swamps throughout Southeast Asia and is highly endangered
because of egg collection for human consumption.
Unusually it moves downriver to hest, laying its
eggs on coastal beaches a number of kilometres from
its riverine feeding areas.
Named the painted terrapin for the red stripe that
appears between the eyes of the male during the mating
season, it lays far fewer eggs than marine turtles
(usually 10-12), and is now restricted to only one
or two nesting beaches in Sarawak.
