Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis
larvatus)
The largest of the old-world monkey species, the
proboscis monkey is found only in Borneo. It feeds
almost exclusively on the leaves and shoots of mangrove
forest and coastal heath and swamp forests, and it
has evolved a complex digestive system with a huge
multi-chambered stomach to cope with this tough and
fibrous diet.
Proboscis monkeys live in family groups of up to
12 females and one dominant male, while younger males
live together in bachelor groups until they are ready
to challenge anolder male for his harem. The huge
nose is found only in males and, combined with the
a huge pot belly and red fur, led to the proboscis
monkey being nicknamed ‘Orang Belanda’ or
the‘Dutchman’ by the people of Sarawak.
The proboscis monkey is endangered due to destruction
of its coastal habitat, as well as illegal hunting.
