Resource Person: Professor Ts. Dr. Lee Yun Li, Sunway University

This workshop introduces participants to the practical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in wildlife conservation. Participants will learn about YOLO, an accessible AI tool that can be used for image recognition and analysis. With some basic Python programming, the workshop will demonstrate how AI can support conservation work in several areas, including wildlife identification from camera trap images, assessing tree health using drone imagery, and land cover analysis.

Professor Ts. Lee Yun Li who will be leading this workshop, has extensive experience applying AI across different industries. She and her team have also collaborated with SFC in piloting the use of AI to assess mangrove health using drone imagery.

By the end of the workshop, participants will gain a better understanding of the potential applications of AI in conservation and become familiar with the basic workflow involved, including image annotation and data processing.

Wildlife researchers often spend a great deal of time collecting valuable data in the field. However, presenting these data clearly and meaningfully can sometimes be challenging. This workshop will focus on how researchers can use R to create clear, engaging, and informative scientific visualizations.

Dr. Ngumbang Juat, who holds a Doctoral degree in Zoology, has been a leading trainer in wildlife statistics using R for nearly 15 years. In this session, he will introduce a variety of graphics and charts that can help researchers communicate their findings more effectively to both scientific audiences and the general public.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to produce a range of graphics and charts in R that can help present scientific results in a clear and impactful way.

Resource Person: Mr. Bruce Teo, Bruce Wildlife and Nature Adventure

Wildlife photography can be a powerful tool for conservation by helping people connect with nature and raising awareness about wildlife protection. This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of wildlife photography and how compelling images can support conservation efforts.

The session will be led by Mr. Bruce Teo, a renowned wildlife photographer who is also an active tourist guide. Through his nature tour company, Bruce Wildlife and Nature Adventure, he has captured many remarkable images of wildlife and natural landscapes.

In addition to photography techniques, the workshop will also explore how social media can be used effectively to promote conservation messages and engage a wider audience.

Resource Person: Mr. Win Sim Tan, Verra and Mdm. Jacqueline Wong, SFC

As carbon markets continue to grow and gain global attention, it is increasingly important for conservation practitioners to understand how carbon credit systems work and how carbon stocks are measured. This workshop is designed to provide participants with a clear introduction to carbon credit mechanisms, as well as the methods used to assess carbon stocks in natural ecosystems.

The session will be led by two experienced practitioners in the field. Mr. Win Sim Tan is the Regional Representative for Verra in Asia and the Pacific. With previous experience at Bursa Malaysia, he was involved in the development of Malaysia’s voluntary carbon market, now known as the Bursa Carbon Exchange.

Mdm. Jacqueline Wong, Head of the Climate Change and Corporate Sustainability Division at SFC, has been actively involved in advancing climate action initiatives, examining the potential for voluntary credits across various certification schemes.

By the end of this workshop, participants will gain a better understanding of what carbon and biodiversity credits are, how they are applied in conservation and climate initiatives.
