5 SUSPECTED TIMBER THIEVES ARRESTED, 73 LOGS SEIZED

9 – 10 October 2018

A team of compliance officers from Sarawak Forestry Corporation Sibu Regional Office and The 10th Battalion of General Operations Force (PGA) Sibu conducted a raid on a sawmill near Jalan Lanang on 9 October 2018.

Before the raid, the team had followed two suspicious looking lorries laden with logs at Jalan Setabau all the way to the said sawmill. Upon inspection, 45 pieces of illegal logs, 2 lorries and a wheel loader were accounted for. The sawmill owner failed to produce any legal documentation to prove the legitimacy of the logs and he was therefore detained together with 3 of his workers on site.

On 10 Oct 2018, the team had foiled another illegal logging operation at Pasai Siong area. An excavator with 28 pieces of illegal logs was found, believed to have been extracted illegally from the nearby forest. None of the logs bears any official markings and all were subsequently detained. A suspect was arrested as he failed to produce any relevant and legal documentation pertaining to logging operations.

Both cases were reported to the nearest Police Stations and handed over to Forest Department Sibu for further investigation.
