Media Release: Not All Sharks Are Protected Species

In response to the article entitled “Sharks being openly sold in Miri market” which was published in the Borneo Post yesterday (Oct 10th), SARAWAK FORESTRY Corporation (SFC) has investigated the case and made the following clarification: This shark species of shark, Carcharhinus Sorrah or known as Yu Kepak Hitam is not protected under Sarawak Wild Life Protection Ordinance, 1998 neither it is listed under CITES Appendix I or II.

“If the species are listed under CITES Appendix I or II, even outside of Sarawak, there are also considered protected species in the State. However, this species of shark is a common species in the market, including Sabah and Indonesia. Therefore, there are no issues of eating, trading and catching,” said Zolkipli Mohamad Aton, CEO of SFCSB.
