05 Mar SARAWAK FORESTRY CORPORATION STATEWIDE OPS TO COMBAT ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE
28 February 2019 : Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) conducted a simultaneous statewide crackdown on illegal trade or selling of wildlife in recent weeks. The operations were made possible with the assistance from other relevant enforcement agencies such as the police (PDRM), Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) and the respective local municipal office.
Operations for the period of 10th to 24th February at the wet markets in Miri, Kuala Baram, Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Matang, Sibu, Julau, Selangau, Bintulu and Kidurong, Serian and Bau yielded some seizures of wildlife meats on sale such as phyton and wild boar. Among the species of rare animals rescued from wildlife traders and keepers were barred eyed owl, buffy fish owl, blue crowned hanging parrot, spotted dove, Borneon terrapin, tortoises, and live pythons.
After the hectic operations, signs are there to show that the incidence are abating according to Haji Zolkipli. ‘Nonetheless, we will not let up in this and continue to be relentless for the days to come to make our presence felt and that SFC means business in preventing illegal wildlife trade. Even at this point in time, the operations are continuously being planned and executed’ he added.
