The Speaker

Dr. Hironori Toyama
Project-Based Assistant Professor for the Tropical Biosphere Research Center at the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan

Dr. Toyama has a wide field experience in conducting quantitative assessment of the plant diversity in SEA, mainly in Vietnam and Cambodia. His works basically important measure to describe spatial patterns and temporal trends of plant diversity as well as documenting new species discovery.

His discoveries including:

  • Garcinia hopii (Clusiaceae), a new species from Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, southern Vietnam
  • Glycosmis suberosa (Rutaceae), a new species from Khao Luang National Park, Thailand

Throughout the surveys, about 40,000 voucher specimens including 39 new species already described and more new species to be described. These methods are efficient and useful for describing spatial patterns and temporal trends of plant diversity, including discovery and documentation of new species, as a basis for developing better conservation planning.
